Collision Compared to Comprehensive Auto Insurance

If you have watched any of the hundreds of commercials on television, then you have probably heard that not all car insurance companies are created equal. The same goes for types of insurance coverage. There are different types of insurance and some cover more than others do. Some are more expensive, others much less so. Two of the most common types of car insurance are comprehensive insurance and collision insurance. Let's compare the two types.

Collision Auto Insurance

Collision coverage, only covers your vehicle when it is in an accident. A lot of new drivers like to get this kind of insurance, it is easier and cheaper to obtain. Most drivers feel they can avoid accidents when they first get their licenses. So in an effort to save money and get out on the road faster, they may purchase a collision policy.

One of the advantages to a collision policy is the fact that if your car is totaled in an accident, having collision insurance will help get you on the road faster. You are not required to purchase one type of insurance or another, as long as you have insurance of some kind, you are allowed to drive. A lot of people like to purchase a combination of both collision and comprehensive policies.

That way, not only are you covered if your car is in an accident, you are also covered when that tree falls through your roof. Although this may be more expensive, you will thank yourself later for being prepared. You'll also save on eventual repairs.

Comprehensive Auto Insurance

Comprehensive coverage is exactly that. Comprehensive coverage covers the other things that can happen to your vehicle. It covers things like natural disasters, if your car is ever damaged by a storm or fire. Comprehensive coverage also protects a vehicle owner from things like theft, vandalism, and accidental damage to your car.

Many people prefer this kind of coverage, simply because it gives them a lot less to worry about. While a collision policy may get you on the road, a comprehensive policy keeps you there.

Different Types of Auto Insurance

Many people don't understand that these are different types of insurance. Sometimes people think they should be covered for a lot more than they actually paid for. This is not out of dishonesty in most cases. It's more a case of the driver not fully understanding all the options available to him or her. Sometimes it is best to be prepared for anything. Other times, the simple route may be preferable. Whatever you do, when you get behind the wheel of your car, remember not only are you responsible for your safety, but also for the safety of the other drivers and people around you. Just having the right policy can save you a lot of grief in the long run if something bad does happen to your vehicle.
